Ratings Report:
- On all four major networks, Trump gave his first Oval Office address where he was expected to declare a state of emergency but instead spent his ten-minute speech prying on human emotion and labeling the situation as a “crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul” (eye-roll). CBS got the most viewers for Trump's speech at 8.04 million (tied with ABC with a 0.9) but NBC scored a 1.7 in adults from 18-49 (7.03 viewers). We are now into our third week of the partial government shutdown since the Democrats are still refusing to help fund his $5.7 billion southern border wall. The Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer demanded airtime for their rebuttal from broadcasters which INTERESTINGLY did BETTER than Trump’s speech with a 29.3/7 in metered-market results on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX NEWS and MSNBC.
- NBC got the highest-rated original broadcast of Tuesday night with the season two premiere of ELLEN’S GAME OF GAMES, scoring a 1.5 and 6.51 million viewers. The show is down about .5 from its season one average. It’s rerun scored a 1.4/6 with 5.49 million viewers following Trump’s address. NEW AMSTERDAM put up a 1.0 in the 18-49 demo for the night.
- On ABC, The CONNERS (1.4) and THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (1.0) returned. To accommodate the speech, BLACKISH (0.7) had an off-start time from 9:20-9:50 PM that was followed by SPLITTING UP TOGETHER (0.7) at 9:50PM. ABC’s night ended with THE ROOKIE with a 0.6 rating which is down a tenth from its fall finale.
- CBS’s NCIS scored a 1.2 in the 18-49 demo and 11.7 million viewers at 8 PM. After it’s showing of the Presidential address at 9 PM (0.9) it ran reruns for the rest of the night.
- LETHAL WEAPON (0.7) and THE GIFTED (0.5) on FOX matched their ratings from their episodes from last week.

Of Note:
- ESPN held the top 6 spots on Monday night, beginning with unsuspected BLOWOUT (and fairly boring) victory in the COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME by the Clemson Tigers. America was met with another Clemson and Alabama matchup for the championship for the THIRD time in FOUR years on Monday night. Alabama was favored to win but the Clemson’s true freshman quarterback finished 20-for-32 for 347 yards and three touchdowns (was awarded the offensive MVP award), leading the team to a 44-16 victory over the crimson tide. The CFP Championship scored a very strong 7.6 in 18-49 adults for ESPN.
- WWE on USA was able to pull up its previous 0.3 to a 0.9 in 18-49 adults.
- LOVE & HIP Hop on VH1 was also able to increase its rating since its short break, rising from 0.4 to 0.7. CARTEL CREW on VH1 premiered on Monday night with a 0.5.
OTHER NEWS:
- DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
- MENTAL SAMURAI on FOX– The “first-ever obstacle course for the mind” that I mentioned a few months before will premiere on February 26th at 9 PM. I’m working on getting some footage and have a call coming up with my contact at FOX to get an update on this and MASKED SINGER.
- PROPAGATE sold LABOR OF LOVE (that I have mentioned before) to FOX straight to series but cast-contingent. FOX sorted the casting and will start production the first week of February-Air date TBD.
- BUSINESS BRIEFS:
- GOOGLE signed a 14-year lease and will start construction to make the former 584,000- square-foot Westside Pavilion mall their new West Los Angeles office site.
- NIELSON confirmed that NETFLIX’s BIRD BOX was watched by nearly 26 million U.S. Netflix subscribers in its first week. However, Nielson said that it was shy of 1 million viewers to beat out the second season of Stranger Things with the best opening-week numbers that it had ever measured.
- NBA and TURNER SPORTS announced a new partnership with TWITTER. NBA fans will vote on Twitter for the player they want to see featured during the live stream of some regular & playoff season games. In the second halves of those games, fans will get to watch the game through that chosen player's perspective.
