RATINGS SUMMARY

  • Not that anyone ever needed any reminding what is the biggest sport in America but a preseason NFL game helped NBC back to relevance last night. NBC took the night in demo and total people with CBS in second place in both
  • The preseason NFL game was back on free to air for the first time in two years after a lockout in 2011 and the London Olympics last year saw it moved to the NFL Network. The Dallas Cowboys took on the Miami Dolphins and the game was down 21% from the 2010 game although it was UP 10% from the first preseason game broadcast on NBC last year.
  • While the news was good for NBC last night, it was not so positive for ABC - Secret Millionaire had its season four premiere and it was down 20% on last year and became the lowest rated premiere for the series. Whodunnit? which has failed to generate any interest, was also down - 9%.
  • The Time Warner and CBS dispute is continuing with both sides losing - CBS are currently losing a potential audience of 3.2 million Time Warner households which equates to 2.9% of US TV households. The head of Time Warner said today they will end it if CBS allow them to sell their channel a la carte which will never happen. So while CBS are losing possible audience (they say the impact is approx 1%), Time Warner have very unhappy subscribers and CBS are digging in hard by blocking access to cbs.com from all Time Warner internet subscribers.
  • So moving back to ratings and while CBS were second for the night, Big Brother was down 4% and Unforgettable was down 8% for a series low
OTHER NEWS

  • It has been well documented that CNN and NBC are both developing scripted projects that will cover the life of Hillary Clinton. Like her or not, these projects are happening because she is interesting but the Republican party disagree. They have come out publicly today saying that if both networks go ahead with the projects, they will ban them from their GOP debates. Not holding my breathe on a TV network caving in on this one!
  • E! are developing Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, a non scripted series that revolves around a group of friends in their 20's living in extreme wealth and came to prominence through social media such as Instagram. The show is from ITV Studios and Leepson Bounds with a never heard of concept before: rich kids partying and hanging out. This is all about the casting and make no mistake, will be heavily scripted.
  • MTV have just announced some new series for next year.
    • House of Food was commissioned quite a while ago - young chefs living under one roof competing in challenges with a prize of a apprenticeship. It's Masterchef meets The Real World. T Group are very good producers so I have some hope for this.
    • Snackdown is from skate boarding "dude" Rob Dyrdek. They take "munchies fare" and elevate it to a fully baked art-form (sounds awesome.......not)
    • One hit wonder SallyAnn Salsano (Jersey Shore) is producing The Ex and the Why. Unresolved issues from past relationships are given the chance to make ammends - please wake me up when it finishes....
