Ratings Report:

NBC scored big in primetime ratings beginning with the NFL WILD CARD GAME, Eagles VS Bears, that ran right into the 8PM showing of the Golden Globes.

NBC’s wild card game was a close match between the underdog Chicago Bears and the 2018 Super Bowl champion, the Philadelphia Eagles. It scored a 11.2 in adults 18-49 and was viewed by nearly 38 million people. The game came down to a field goal attempt by the Bears in the last 10 seconds of the game that was narrowly missed. The Bear’s kicker was booed by his own fans at Soldier Field and the team was sent home without a chance at the playoffs.

The 76th GOLDEN GLOBES on NBC scored a 4.5 among adults 18-49 in the preliminary ratings, which was better than its 2018 4.2 early rating (5.0 final). This year’s awards were (a little) less politically charged but the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements were still major themes of speeches. A STAR IS BORN was the favorite to take home most of the awards, but GREEN BOOK and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY surprisingly did instead. In his acceptance speech for Best Actor, Christian Bale thanked Satan for giving him inspiration to play former U.S. Vice-President, Dick Cheney, in VICE.

CBS’S NCIS: LOS ANGELES had its winter season premiere and did the best for the network at 0.9 at the 9PM slot. Non-football fans tuned into 60 minutes at 7PM which scored a 0.8. MADAM SECRETARY’s rating rose to 0.6 compared to last week when it aired out of its timeslot.

FOX’s THE SIMPSONS (0.9), BOB’S BURGERS (0.9), FAMILY GUY (1.1) and REL (0.5) all returned this week with similar performances with other non-NFL boosted episodes.

ABC ran a re-run of AMERICA’S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS at 0.6 then a new episode that went up 0.1 to 0.9 from the most recently aired original on December 2nd. SHARK TANK also improved from its last original showing at 0.2 to 0.9.

OTHER NEWS:

DEVELOPMENT NEWS:

-The MASKED SINGER premiered on January 2nd at 9PM on FOX with a final 3.0 and a total of 9.36 million viewers. The viewers were introduced to 6/12 contestants in quirky costumes such as a sparkly Hollywood Elvis like-peacock and a unicorn from the medieval era. The different characters faced off until the judges decided to eliminate the Hippo character, which turned out to be the famous Pittsburg Steelers wide receiver, Antonio Brown.

-The network invested heavily in a marketing budget.  However, not all within Fox have the same high expectations for the show. The day of the premiere, a friend at Fox sent me a gif of a train going over a cliff as his prediction but he sure was wrong. This past weekend I had some friends over for a BBQ. When a Masked Singer promo came on, those with ages ranging from 22 to 55 were talking about how much they liked the premiere and were guessing who they thought was behind the masks.  Let’s see how week two goes but it sure has momentum.
