STREAMING UPDATES
- GREENLIT
- AMAZON has greenlit, ANANSI BOYS, a six-episode adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 2005 fantasy novel. The show is “neither a spinoff nor a sequel to the recently cancelled STARZ drama” yet focuses on a “young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father, Mr. Nancy.” The showrunners have stated that they “are trying to make a new kind of show with ANASI BOYS” and aim to “celebrate diversity both in front of and behind the camera.”
- ORDERED
- AMAZON has ordered TAMPA BAYS, an LGBTQ+ docuseries following a group of lesbian friends living in Tampa Bay, Florida. The eight-episode season will arrive this fall under 3 BALL PRODUCTIONS, airing exclusively on PRIME VIDEO. Showrunner, Melissa Bidwell, is “thrilled this type of series can exist in the premium streaming space.” A fall premiere date will be announced soon.
- NETFLIX has ordered political thriller series, THE NIGHT AGENT, based on the the Matthew Quirk 2019 bestselling novel. THE NIGHT AGENT centers “around a low-level FBI agent who lives in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings – until the night it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way the the Oval Office.” The 10-episode series which will be executive produced via his own, MIDDKID PRODUCTIONS. The pandemic read will be transformed by Shawn Ryan under SONY PICTURES TELEVISION.
INDUSTRY NEWS
- After fans from the recently cancelled MANIFEST cried out on social media (#saveManifest), NETFLIX and NBC are taking a second look at reviving the series. The series was terminated after three seasons and is already restarting “talks with WARNER BROS. TELEVISION about a possible fourth season.” The series has climbed the ranks in NETFLIX’s consumer-facing “Top 10” widget before and after its cancellation announcement. The title has defended the first rank for 27 straight days which tied NETFLIX’s quarantine binge essential: TIGER KING. Regardless of the revival talks, showrunner, Jeff Rake will seek out a way to finance a 2-hour movie to solidify his six-season plan.
- As Blockchain and NFTs are increasingly integrated within the world of entertainment, there will be a new television series to launch on the “crypto ledger”. On August 2nd, the Seth Green and Steve Aoki project, DOMINION X will debut. The show will be on NIFTY GATEWAY, an NFT marketplace owned by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. This news follows FOX’s BENTO BOX ENTERTAINMENT and their plans to curate animated series, KRAPOPOLIS, entirely on block chain. The Blockchain Creative Labs will operate a digital marketplace dedicated “to commercializing characters, background art, and GIF non-fungible tokens related to the series and other projects.” This means that fans will be able to own a piece of the show, digitally or physically before it premieres. Despite the dip in NFT sales from May to June, the demand is rising again. Unlike KRAPOPOLIS, made by RICK & MORTY’s Dave Harmon, DOMINION X seems outlandish, yet matches the slightly absurd notion of blockchain and television fusion. Check out the trippy (slightly strange) trailer here.
- Hopping on the crypto trend, LIONSGATE and DRAFTKINGS will launch, AUTOGRAPH, a NFT platform co-founded by Tom Brady. The production company will launch AUTOGRAPH’s content featuring properties from JOHN WICK, HUNGER GAMES, TWILIGHT SAGA, MAD MEN, and DIRTY DANCING. EVP & Head of Lionsgate Global Live claims, “We’re delighted to partner with the best-in-class Autograph to launch our leading film and television properties in the fast-growing NFT marketplace.” The first entertainment properties will drop this fall, as the demand for the digital assets rise and competitors fight to dominate the NFT sphere.
